EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the fashionable attire of an Incroyable, a prominent figure during the Directory period in French history (1795-1799). The Incroyable's striking costume is defined by its Italianate influences, as evidenced by the silk bicorn hat that resembles the hats of Italian infantry soldiers. The French style suit, crafted from dark blue wool, boasts large shell buttons, high-waisted breeches, and a very high-cut gilet (waistcoat). The cane he carries adds an air of sophistication and nonchalance to his ensemble. The intricately detailed handcolored etching is the work of Auguste Etienne Guillaumot Jr., from the collection "Costumes of the Directory," published in Paris by Rouquette in 1875. The designs for this series were inspired by the original prints of the era, 1795-1799, and meticulously recreated by Eugene Lacoste and Draner. The Incroyable's fashion-forward appearance was a hallmark of the Directory era, a time of political and social upheaval in France. The large buttons on his suit, which were the size of plates, were a popular trend during this period, as were the high-waisted breeches and gilets. The silk bicorn hat, with its distinctive curve and tall crown, was also a symbol of the era's flair for the dramatic and theatrical. This etching offers a glimpse into the opulent and intriguing world of the Incroyable, a figure who embodied the extravagance and style of the Directory period. It is a testament to the enduring allure of historical fashion and the artistry of the past.
