EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historical artifact of immense significance - a letter from Edward IV, King of England, to Francis II, Duke of Brittany. Dated 9th January 1471, the letter was written during Edward's exile in St Pol after his flight from England due to the coalition between Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, and the Lancastrians. In this eloquently composed letter, Edward beseeches Francis for assistance in reclaiming his kingdom and requests him to lend credibility on his behalf to his uncle Jacques de Luxembourg. The exquisite handwriting is that of a secretary but bears the autograph signature of Edward himself. The context surrounding this correspondence adds further intrigue. After sailing back to England on 11th March 1471 and entering London on 11th April, three days later saw the decisive Battle of Barnet where Warwick was defeated and killed. This marked a turning point in the Wars of the Roses (1455-1485), solidifying Edward's position as sovereign. The vibrant colors captured in this print bring life to an era long past - an era characterized by power struggles and political alliances. It serves as a reminder not only of medieval times but also highlights how personal correspondences played crucial roles in shaping history. Preserved within these delicate lines lies evidence not only of royal authority but also human connections forged amidst tumultuous circumstances. As we gaze upon this image today, we are transported back into time; witnessing firsthand the intricate web woven by figures such as Richard Neville (Warwick) and Francis II alongside their interactions with King Edward IV himself.
