Boneshaker bicycle, c1870
Boneshaker bicycle, c1870. The boneshaker was a type of pedal-driven bicycle popular around 1870. The design was essentially a modification of the earlier hobby horse bicycle, with cranks and pedals applied directly to the front wheel, which enabled the rider to propel the machine more easily. The bicycle was a heavy machine by modern standards, weighing some 60lbs (27kg) on average, and capable of being pedalled at no more than about 8mph (13km/h). The boneshaker got its name from the obvious consequences arising from its seat having no springs under it, coupled with solid metal tyres and the preponderance of cobbled roads at the time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of innovation and transportation in the 19th century. The focal point of the image is a Boneshaker bicycle, a pedal-driven marvel that gained popularity around 1870. Its design, an evolution from the earlier hobby horse bicycle, featured cranks and pedals directly attached to the front wheel, enabling riders to propel themselves with greater ease. The Boneshaker was not for the faint-hearted; its solid metal tires and lack of springs on its seat made for a bone-rattling ride on cobbled roads. Weighing in at an impressive 60 pounds (27 kilograms), this heavy machine could reach speeds no higher than about 8 miles per hour (13 kilometers per hour). In this scene, a distinguished gentleman donning a top hat confidently takes his place atop this remarkable invention. His attire reflects the fashion of the time as he prepares to embark on his cycling journey. This wood engraving transports us back to an era where bicycles were still novel and represented progress in technology and transportation. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come since then while appreciating those who paved the way for our modern means of getting around.
