EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1958, capturing the essence of Sheffield's Corn Exchange on Broad Street in Yorkshire. Built in 1881 for the Duke of Norfolk, this architectural gem stood as a testament to the city's rich history and vibrant commercial activity. However, tragedy struck in 1947 when a devastating fire engulfed its Central Hall, leaving it gutted and forever altering its grandeur. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness the aftermath of that fateful event. The once bustling offices surrounding the Central Hall have been demolished, leaving behind an eerie sense of emptiness. Yet amidst this desolation lies an undeniable beauty - remnants of intricate stonework still stand tall against a backdrop of cloudy skies. Sheffield Libraries proudly preserves this original photograph from their archives (w02698), allowing us to delve into Sheffield's past and appreciate its architectural heritage. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded not only of the physical transformation that occurred but also of resilience and rebirth. Let us take a moment to reflect on how places like Sheffield's Corn Exchange hold stories within their walls - tales woven by generations who walked these halls with purpose and ambition. This print serves as a poignant reminder that even after devastation strikes, there is always hope for renewal and reinvention.
