Old Leadenhall Market, London, c.1880: A Journey Through Time This series of views takes us back to Old Leadenhall Market in London during the late 19th century, as captured by the skilled lens of the Illustrated London News. Dating back to the 14th century, this historic market has long been a vibrant hub of commerce and community in the heart of the city. Starting at the top left, we find the market entrance on Gracechurch Street. The intricately carved wooden doors and wrought-iron gates hint at the treasures that lie within. As we move clockwise, we enter Half Moon Passage, a covered walkway lined with quaint shops and market stalls. The Half Moon Corner, with its distinctive pub and clock, serves as a popular meeting place for locals and visitors alike. The Old Poulterers Shop, located at the bottom left, showcases the fresh produce and meats that were once a staple of the market. Live Stock Alley, as the name suggests, was home to livestock vendors and their animals. The Shambles, a narrow, winding alleyway, was where butchers plied their trade, the sounds and smells of their work a constant presence. At the center bottom, The Old Leather Market comes into view. This area was renowned for its leather merchants, who sold a variety of leather goods, from gloves and belts to saddles and harnesses. Each of these images offers a glimpse into the bustling, diverse world of Old Leadenhall Market during its heyday. These captivating photographs, taken by the Illustrated London News in December 1880, provide a fascinating window into the past and serve as a testament to the enduring charm and history of this remarkable market.
