12th 1869 Admiralty Aristocrat Liberal Seymour Somerset Whig
EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Edward Seymour, the 12th Duke of Somerset, in the prime of his political career. Born in 1812, Seymour was a prominent British Whig aristocrat and politician who served in various cabinet positions during the mid-19th century. He is best known for his tenure as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1868 to 1870. Seymour's political career began in earnest in the 1830s, when he was elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Weymouth and Melcombe Regis. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Liberal Party, serving as Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department and President of the Board of Trade before being appointed to the position of First Lord of the Admiralty. During his time at the Admiralty, Seymour oversaw significant modernization of the Royal Navy, including the construction of new warships and the implementation of innovative technologies. He also played a key role in the response to the Fenian Raids, a series of attacks on British targets in Canada and the United States by Irish nationalist groups. Despite his political successes, Seymour's tenure at the Admiralty was not without controversy. He was criticized for his handling of the HMS Victoria disaster, in which over 300 sailors lost their lives. Seymour resigned from his position in 1870, but remained active in politics until his death in 1885. This photograph, taken in 1869, captures the Duke of Somerset in the midst of his busy political life. Dressed in the formal attire of a British aristocrat, he exudes confidence and authority. The photograph offers a glimpse into the world of mid-19th century British politics, a time of great change and innovation.
