View of the Villa Borghese and its Orangerie from the Villa Medici, 1826. Creator
View of the Villa Borghese and its Orangerie from the Villa Medici, 1826. The Villa Borghese and its grounds was a familiar sight to French artists because it bordered the Villa Medici, which housed the French Academy beginning in 1803. Both of these grand residences were located on Il Pincio, one of the seven hills of Rome. The term villa in the title refers to a princely house set in large gardens. An orangerie was an early type of greenhouse used to shelter tender plants, especially oranges, during the winter months

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "View of the Villa Borghese and its Orangerie from the Villa Medici, 1826" takes us back to the enchanting landscapes of Rome in the early 19th century. The image showcases two magnificent residences, the Villa Borghese and the Villa Medici, nestled on Il Pincio, one of Rome's seven hills. The French Academy found its home in the splendid Villa Medici from 1803 onwards, making this view a familiar sight for French artists at that time. The term "villa" refers to a grand house surrounded by extensive gardens, which is exactly what we see here. These lush grounds were meticulously designed and maintained to create an oasis of beauty and tranquility. Intriguingly, we also catch a glimpse of an orangerie in this scene. An orangerie was an early form of greenhouse specifically built to protect delicate plants during winter months. This particular orangerie served as shelter for tender orange trees among other precious flora. Frederic Bourgeois de Mercey skillfully captured this picturesque moment with graphite on paper during his visit to Rome between 1805 and 1860. His attention to detail brings forth not only architectural splendor but also evokes a sense of serenity that must have enveloped these remarkable surroundings.
