Christ Disputing with Doctors, c. 1503-1504. These two woodcuts (1959.99.16-17) feature events that overlap in both Marys and Jesuss lives. The first is a scene in which Mary finds Jesus, after days of searching, speaking from behind a lectern to the temples elders. The second refers to the the moment Mary was forced to say goodbye to her son as he leaves for Jerusalem and ultimately on to the events of his Passion. This print represents the most sorrowful episode of the series as Mary kneels, beseeching Jesus to stay

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Christ Disputing with Doctors, c. 1503-1504" by Albrecht Dürer takes us back to a significant moment in both Mary and Jesus's lives. In this woodcut, we witness the intense scene where Mary finally finds her son after days of searching, only to discover him engaged in a profound discussion with the elders at the temple. The image beautifully captures Jesus standing behind a lectern, passionately sharing his wisdom while surrounded by learned men. Mary's face reveals a mix of relief and awe as she witnesses her son's extraordinary knowledge and spiritual connection. It is an encounter that showcases not only Jesus' divine nature but also highlights his role as a teacher and leader. However, intertwined with this joyous reunion is an undercurrent of sorrow. The second part of this woodcut portrays the heart-wrenching moment when Mary must bid farewell to her beloved son as he embarks on his journey towards Jerusalem and ultimately faces his crucifixion. In this poignant depiction, we see Mary kneeling before Jesus, desperately pleading for him to stay by her side. Her anguish is palpable as she clings onto every precious moment spent together before their inevitable separation. Albrecht Dürer masterfully conveys these complex emotions through intricate details and expert craftsmanship in this Renaissance-era artwork. This print serves as a powerful reminder of the immense sacrifices made by both mother and son during their shared destiny that forever changed humanity's course.
