1. The Channel Islands: A Timeless Scene from Bordeaux Harbour, Guernsey The Channel Islands' Bordeaux Harbour, located in the picturesque parish of Vale in the northeastern part of Guernsey, is a captivating snapshot of a bygone era. This photograph, part of the Boswell Collection, captures the essence of a simpler time, with three men and several small boats dotting the harbor. Dating back to approximately 1900, this image offers a glimpse into the history and traditions of this unique fishing port and bay. Bordeaux Harbour was once a thriving fishing hub, with local fishermen casting their nets and lines in the hope of a bountiful catch. Today, the harbor is more commonly known for its serene beach, one of the few dog-friendly beaches in Guernsey that can be enjoyed year-round. The Vale Castle, perched atop a hill overlooking the harbor, offers a stunning vantage point to take in the breathtaking views. The annual Guernsey winkle-picking contest, held on 23 October each year, adds to the rich tapestry of traditions that surround Bordeaux Harbour. This quirky event, which involves the collection of the edible winkle (a type of limpet), is a testament to the area's deep-rooted connection to the sea and its abundant resources. This photograph, with its timeless charm and evocative imagery, invites us to reflect on the history and beauty of Bordeaux Harbour and the Channel Islands, a place where tradition and natural beauty continue to intertwine.
