Tetley shire horses outside York Minster, North Yorkshire, 1969. Artist: Michael Walters
Tetley shire horses outside York Minster, North Yorkshire, 1969. The world famous shire horses gave service to the company for 184 years and started their work when Joshua Tetley established his brewery in Leeds in 1822, and used the horses to pull the drays. As deliveries of the barrels started to be made by lorry, the shire horses were kept on for ceremonial and promotional purposes but the Danish owners of Tetleys decided to retire the horses in August 2006 due to the rising cost of their upkeep. The last horses used to pull the drays were retired to the Bankside Shire Stud in Thurstonland near Holmfirth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Michael Walters captures a nostalgic moment in history, showcasing the iconic Tetley shire horses outside York Minster in North Yorkshire, 1969. These world-famous horses served the company faithfully for an impressive 184 years, starting their work when Joshua Tetley established his brewery in Leeds back in 1822. Originally used to pull drays delivering barrels of beer, these majestic creatures became symbols of tradition and heritage as deliveries transitioned to lorries. Although retired from their original duties due to rising costs, the Danish owners of Tetleys kept the shire horses on for ceremonial and promotional purposes until August 2006. This image immortalizes one such occasion where these magnificent animals proudly stand before the grandeur of York Minster. The medieval architecture of this renowned cathedral provides a stunning backdrop for this snapshot from the past. The photograph not only showcases the beauty of British craftsmanship but also highlights how deeply rooted Christianity is within England's cultural fabric. Michael Walters' expert composition perfectly captures a slice of life from mid-20th century Britain. It portrays a time when horse-drawn transportation still played a vital role in industry and daily life. As we gaze upon this image today, it serves as a reminder that progress may change our methods but cannot erase our appreciation for tradition and history.
