Inside Jamaica Inn, 1952. Creator: Shirley Markham
Inside Jamaica Inn, 1952. Woman cleaning glasses, drunk men. Illustration for " Jamaica Inn" by Daphne du Maurier. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Inside Jamaica Inn, 1952" by Shirley Markham offers a glimpse into the atmosphere of Daphne du Maurier's renowned novel. The illustration depicts a scene within the inn, where a woman can be seen diligently cleaning glasses while surrounded by inebriated men. Markham's artistic prowess shines through her detailed and evocative portrayal of this moment. Born in 1931, Markham honed her skills at London's Central School of Art under the tutelage of Mervyn Peake and drew inspiration from esteemed British illustrators like Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. Her passion for art extended beyond borders as she explored Italy's Dolomite Mountains and Rome, sketching classical architecture. After graduating in 1952, Markham embarked on a successful career as a graphic designer producing illustrations for books, comics' cartoons, menus, and programs. However, societal expectations prevailed during that era when middle-class women were encouraged to focus solely on domestic responsibilities after marriage. Consequently, despite her undeniable talent and potential for greatness in the field of illustration, Markham relinquished her professional aspirations upon marrying in 1957. For years her remarkable portfolio remained hidden away in the family attic until now when it is finally being unveiled to the world. This publication marks an important milestone as it showcases Shirley Markham's exceptional work for the first time since its creation—a testament to her enduring legacy as an artist whose talents deserve recognition far beyond their initial confines.
