1959 1996 Bosnia Challenger Deployment Dragoon Guards Operation Patrol Photograph Resolute December
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the 1st Queen's Dragoon Guards on patrol in the picturesque town of Kljuc, Bosnia, during their deployment with Operation RESOLUTE for the Implementation Force (IFOR) in 1996. The 1st Queen's Dragoon Guards, a British Army regiment with a rich history dating back to 1599, were among the international peacekeeping forces sent to the Balkans to establish order and stability following the Yugoslav Wars. In this image, we see the Dragoon soldiers, dressed in their distinctive uniforms and helmets, moving cautiously through the narrow streets of Kljuc. The Challenger armored vehicle, a symbol of their military might, is parked at the side of the road, ready to provide support if needed. The serene landscape, dotted with traditional houses and lush greenery, contrasts sharply with the tense and uncertain atmosphere that would have surrounded the soldiers as they carried out their duties. This photograph is one of 60 images documenting the deployment of the 1st Queen's Dragoon Guards in Bosnia between June and December 1996. The images offer a unique insight into the daily life and experiences of the soldiers during this critical period in European history. The photographs, which are part of a larger collection held by Mary Evans Picture Library, provide a valuable record of the bravery and dedication of the men and women who served in Bosnia as part of IFOR, and remind us of the important role that peacekeeping forces play in maintaining international security and stability.
