Hanshan and Shide (Kanzan and Jittoku), mid-1500s. Creator: Shikibu Terutada (Japanese
Hanshan and Shide (Kanzan and Jittoku), mid-1500s. These three fan-shaped paintings, now mounted as individual hanging scrolls, were once part of a set of 20 mounted on a folding screen. They portray the Chinese subjects, from left to right, of the scholar-official Pan Lang, Hanshan reciting his poetry to Shide, and a duck in flight above reeds. Pan Lang grew so fond of the mountain in his place of exile that when he was ordered back to the capital, he rode backward on his donkey so he could see it until it receded into the distance. Hanshan and Shide worked in the kitchen of a Zen monastery, but were actually reincarnations of the bodhisattvas Manjushri and Samantabhadra. The combination of a mandarin duck and reeds may have signified a level of attainment in Chinese civil service exams. All three paintings bear the seal of the Kantobased artist Shikibu Terutada. Shikibu was familiar with Kano school painting, but he also modeled his early style after that of the prominent Kanto-based Kenko Shokei (active about 1470-after 1523)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Shikibu Terutada, a renowned Japanese artist from the mid-1500s. Originally part of a set of 20 mounted on a folding screen, these three fan-shaped paintings now stand as individual hanging scrolls. The first painting depicts Pan Lang, an esteemed scholar-official who developed an intense fondness for the mountain in his place of exile. As he was ordered to return to the capital, Pan Lang rode backward on his donkey to catch one last glimpse of his beloved mountain before it disappeared into the distance. In the second painting, we witness Hanshan reciting poetry to Shide. Although they worked in a Zen monastery's kitchen, their true identities were believed to be reincarnations of bodhisattvas Manjushri and Samantabhadra. Lastly, we are treated to a stunning depiction of a mandarin duck soaring above reeds. This combination symbolizes achievement in Chinese civil service exams and adds depth and meaning to this remarkable artwork. All three paintings bear Shikibu Terutada's seal—a testament to his skill and mastery as an artist. While influenced by Kano school painting and Kenko Shokei's style, Shikibu has crafted a unique aesthetic that captivates viewers with its beauty and storytelling prowess. This print serves as both an homage to ancient Chinese culture and artistry while showcasing Japan's rich artistic heritage through the lens of Heritage Art/Heritage Images.
