EDITORS COMMENTS
A Blast from the Past: The Red Lion Pub, Russell Square, London Step back in time with this evocative photograph of the Red Lion Pub, located in the heart of London's Bloomsbury area on Russell Square. The image, taken in 1964, captures the pub's distinctive red brick facade and the ornate signage bearing its iconic name and logo. The Red Lion was a cherished local watering hole, a place where friends gathered over a pint, stories were shared, and laughter filled the air. The pub, which was part of the Hoare and Company Limited estate, stood proudly on the corner of the square, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of the city. The tranquil atmosphere of Russell Square, with its beautiful gardens and fountain, provided a perfect backdrop for this quintessential British pub. Sadly, the Red Lion, like many historic buildings in London, did not escape the relentless march of progress. By July 2018, the pub had been demolished, and the site now houses the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury. The back of this print carries a poignant reminder of the pub's former existence, with the details of its address and the date of its demise. This photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era, a time when life moved at a slower pace, and community spirit thrived in the local pub. It serves as a reminder of the rich history and character that once defined London's streets and the memories that continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved the Red Lion.
