Skobelev on the Shipka, c1878, (1939). Creator: Vasily Vereshchagin
Skobelev on the Shipka, c1878, (1939). The scene after the taking of the Shipka Pass by Russian troops in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. General Mikhail Skobelev (1843-1882) inspects the ranks of the victors, while the bodies of the enemy lie in the snow. The battle, fought between the Bulgarians, aided by Russian volunteers, and the Ottoman Empire, took place at Sheynovo, near Shipka in Bulgaria. Vasili Vereshchagin (1842-1904) painted realistic battle scenes, some of which where too graphic to be exhibited. He travelled extensively and gained international recognition, and even showed his Turkestan series at the Crystal Palace in London in 1873. Painting in the collection of The State Russian Museum, St Petersburg, Russia. From " The Russian State Museum". [State Art Publishers, Moscow and Leningrad, 1939]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Skobelev on the Shipka, c1878" captures a powerful scene from the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. General Mikhail Skobelev stands tall and proud as he inspects the ranks of victorious Russian troops, with the bodies of fallen enemies scattered in the snowy landscape behind him. This intense battle took place at Sheynovo near Shipka in Bulgaria, where Bulgarian forces aided by Russian volunteers fought against the Ottoman Empire. Created by Vasily Vereshchagin, this painting is part of his collection that showcases realistic battle scenes. Vereshchagin's work often depicted war in its rawest form, sometimes deemed too graphic for public exhibition. Nevertheless, his talent gained international recognition and he even displayed his Turkestan series at London's Crystal Palace in 1873. This particular artwork is housed in The State Russian Museum in St Petersburg, Russia. It serves as a testament to both Skobelev's leadership and bravery on the battlefield and Vereshchagin's ability to capture such poignant moments through oil painting. As we gaze upon this print today, it transports us back to a time when warfare was harshly fought amidst wintry conditions. It reminds us of the sacrifices made by soldiers like Skobelev and highlights the devastating consequences of conflict. Through its vivid colors and attention to detail, this image allows us to reflect on history while honoring those who have served their countries during times of war.
