Napoleon Pour Rire!!, 1883. Artist: Joseph Swain
Napoleon Pour Rire!!, 1883. This cartoon shows France bonneting the unfortunate Prince Jerome Napoleon - Plon-plon, as he was known. He was the head of the Bonaparte family, and was chosen to succeed Napoleon III, should the Bonapartist Party ever regain power, pending the majority of his son. Now that Leon Gambetta, the former Head of the Third Republic, had died, Prince Jerome had issued a Proclamation denouncing the Republic and claiming that he was the only fit person to lead France. This led to him being arrested and held in custody for a short time. Punch, however, said he should simply have been laughed at for his pretensions. From Punch, or the London Charivari, January 27, 1883

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the satirical cartoon titled "Napoleon Pour Rire!!" created by Joseph Swain in 1883. The artwork humorously depicts France metaphorically bonneting Prince Jerome Napoleon, also known as Plon-plon, who was the head of the Bonaparte family during that time. In this political caricature, Prince Jerome had issued a Proclamation denouncing the Republic and proclaiming himself as the only suitable leader for France after Leon Gambetta's death. The cartoon reflects Punch magazine's perspective that instead of arresting him, Prince Jerome should have been laughed at for his audacious claims. With intricate engravings and clever symbolism, Swain masterfully portrays this significant moment in French politics during the 19th century. "Napoleon Pour Rire!!" serves as a historical testament to the complex dynamics between royalty and politics in France at that time. It showcases both satire and caricature as powerful tools used to comment on societal issues. This heritage image partnership print is an invaluable glimpse into an era where political power struggles were often met with artistic mockery. Through this photograph, viewers can appreciate Joseph Swain's artistic talent while gaining insight into the fascinating history surrounding Prince Jerome Napoleon's ambitions and their impact on French society during this period of transition from monarchy to republicanism.
