Lovers Visit, 1680-1730. Creator: Tamura Suio (Japanese)
Lovers Visit, 1680-1730. This celebrated work by Tamura Suio was acquired from Osaka in 1976, donated to the museum in 1985, and was included in the 1998 exhibition Highlights of Asian Paintings at the Nara National Museum and the Suntory Museum of Art in Japan. It depicts four women of fashion at leisure who are interrupted by the arrival of a young man, the lover of one of the women. Former director Sherman Lee remarked on the pictorial design of such paintings of beautiful women, explaining that " the placement of the figures and their interrelations, psychological and aesthetic, show a calculation and subtlety worthy of the great decorative masters."

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the artistic brilliance of Tamura Suio, a renowned Japanese creator. This celebrated work was acquired from Osaka in 1976 and generously donated to the museum in 1985. Its significance was further recognized when it became part of the prestigious exhibition "Highlights of Asian Paintings" at both the Nara National Museum and the Suntory Museum of Art in Japan. The painting itself transports us to a scene set during Japan's Edo period (1615-1868), where four fashionable women are depicted enjoying their leisure time. However, their tranquility is abruptly interrupted by the arrival of a young man who happens to be one woman's lover. The composition skillfully captures not only their physical placement but also their psychological and aesthetic interrelations, showcasing Tamura Suio's mastery as a decorative master. Former director Sherman Lee aptly described these types of paintings featuring beautiful women as having an intricate design that exudes calculation and subtlety worthy of great admiration. The hanging scroll format adds to its allure, with ink and color on silk bringing life to this heritage art piece. This remarkable creation by Tamura Suio now resides within The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection, serving as a testament to his talent and contributing significantly to our understanding and appreciation for Japanese artistry during this historical period.
