Entering the Rapids, 1874. Creator: James David Smillie
Entering the Rapids, 1874. Tourists on board the steamer Spartan as it navigates white water on the the Saint Lawrence River, Ontario, Canada....the water leaps tempestuously around her, and she pauses an instant like a thing of life, bracing herself for a crisis, before she plunges into the boiling current and rides defiantly down it. It is a grand, thrilling moment...The rapids are nine miles long, and are divided in the centre by a picturesque island, the southern course usually being chosen by the steamers. The Spartan ran the distance in half an hour, without steam, and then emerged into the waters of Lake St. Francis.... From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. Entering the Rapids, 1874 - A Thrilling Journey on the Saint Lawrence River
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print captured by James David Smillie in 1874, we witness a heart-stopping moment as tourists aboard the steamer Spartan navigate through the treacherous white waters of the Saint Lawrence River in Ontario, Canada. The sheer power and tempestuousness of the water surround them, creating an atmosphere of both excitement and apprehension. The steamer stands defiantly amidst the chaos, pausing for an instant like a living entity bracing itself for an impending crisis. With great courage and determination, it plunges into the boiling current, riding down with unwavering defiance. It is a grand spectacle that fills one's soul with awe and admiration. Stretching over nine miles long, these rapids are divided by a picturesque island at their center. Typically opting for the southern course to navigate through this natural wonderland, steamers like Spartan complete this daring journey without relying on steam power alone. In just half an hour, they conquer nature's challenge before emerging triumphantly into Lake St. Francis. This remarkable image comes from "Picturesque America; or The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant in 1874. Smillie's artistry skillfully captures not only the geographical features but also evokes emotions associated with adventure and exploration during America's vibrant nineteenth century. As we gaze upon this print today, we can't help but be transported back to that era - feeling exhilarated alongside those courageous travelers who embarked on such thrilling journeys to discover new horizons in our vast country.
