RMS Olympic BL24990_021
RMS OLYMPIC, White Star Line. View of the boat deck, looking aft, showing lifeboats and funnels. The Olympic was the first of a class of luxurious express transatlantic ocean liners, and entered service with the White Star Line in 1911 as the largest cruise liner in the world. Sister ship of the RMS Titanic, she was the only one of the class to prove a success, serving until 1935. After the Titanic sank in 1912, her stokers went on strike until sufficient lifeboats were provided for all passengers and crew. The ship was then refitted and additional safety measures installed. In 1914 the Olympic was requisitioned as a troopship, served in the Gallipoli campaign in 1915, and brought US troops to Europe in 1917. She returned to civilian service in 1920. Photographed by Bedford Lemere, Southampton, October 1921

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Bedford Lemere in October 1921, showcases the RMS Olympic, a White Star Line ocean liner and the first of her kind to offer luxurious transatlantic travel. With an entrance into service in 1911 as the largest cruise ship in the world, the Olympic was a sister ship to the ill-fated RMS Titanic. After the tragic sinking of the Titanic in 1912, the Olympic's stokers went on strike until adequate lifeboats were provided for all passengers and crew, resulting in additional safety measures being installed. The image offers a breathtaking view of the boat deck, looking aft, with lifeboats and funnels prominently displayed. The Olympic's elegant design, with its distinctive funnels and intricate lifeboat arrangements, is a testament to the engineering marvels of the early 20th century. The Olympic's successful service continued even during wartime. In 1914, she was requisitioned as a troopship and played a vital role in the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. Later, she brought US troops to Europe in 1917. After the war, she returned to civilian service in 1920. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the rich maritime history of the RMS Olympic and the significant role she played in both peacetime and wartime transportation. Bedford Lemere's skillful composition and masterful use of light and shadow beautifully capture the essence of this historic vessel.
