Fashion - 1970s. From bloomers to briefs. Bloomers, droopy drawers, passion killers

Fashion - 1970s. From bloomers to briefs. Bloomers, droopy drawers, passion killers
Fashion - 1970s. From bloomers to briefs. Bloomers, droopy drawers, passion killers, knickers, panties, briefs - no matter what they have been labelled in the past 100 years, womens unmentionables have always done vital undercover work in the wonderful world of fashion, . Demure or daring, naughty or nice practical or fun, all these things have had their place in this century of undie-wear. There were baggy bloomers and rib-crusher corsets of the 1880s which hoisted bosoms to wondrous heights and made a girl think twice about sitting down. Next came the excruciating waist-nippers of the 1900s that had maidens striving for an 18-inch middle and dropping like flies in a faint to get one. On to the high-kicking 1920s and it was boop-boop-a-doop elasticated knicker-legs and down with the bust in a flat-as-a- pancake bra. Come 1940 things were looking decidedly sexy with saucy oo-la-la camiknickers that made mum fear her daughter would catch her death of cold. Then in the 60s the squeeze was on bottoms with wriggle-on roll-ons that were the despair of every enthusiastic bottom-pincher. And finally we come to 1977 and the freedom-loving liberated girls who have made brief-is-beautiful the rule of the day. 1977 keeping down to the bare essentials. November 1977 P017456

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us on a journey through the ever-evolving world of women's fashion in the 1970s. From bloomers to briefs, this century of undie-wear showcases the vital undercover work that these unmentionables have done in shaping the trends and styles of their time. The image transports us back to an era where fashion choices ranged from demure to daring, naughty to nice, practical to fun. It reminds us that no matter how they were labeled - be it bloomers, droopy drawers, passion killers, knickers, panties or briefs - these undergarments played a significant role in defining women's sense of style and self-expression. We are taken on a historical tour as we witness the transformation from baggy bloomers and rib-crusher corsets of the 1880s to waist-nippers striving for an 18-inch middle in the early 1900s. The high-kicking 1920s brought elasticated knicker-legs and flattened bustlines with pancake bras. By the 1940s, saucy camiknickers added a touch of sexiness while raising concerns about catching cold. Intriguingly enough, by the swinging sixties came wriggle-on roll-ons that squeezed bottoms tightly – much to every enthusiastic bottom-pincher's despair. Finally arriving at 1977 – a year synonymous with freedom and liberation – we see bold young women embracing minimalism with brief-is-beautiful becoming their mantra. This nostalgic photograph captures not just fashion history but also reflects societal shifts and changing attitudes towards femininity throughout time. It serves as a reminder that even our most intimate garments can tell stories about who we are as individuals and how our desires for comfort or expression shape our choices within the wonderful world of fashion.
