EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph showcases an enchanting array of Puffball mushrooms, beautifully illustrated by A. Bessin and expertly rendered in color by Lassus for Leon Rolland's esteemed mycological guide, "Atlas des Champignons," published by Paul Klincksieck in Paris, 1910. The intricately detailed image features an assortment of puffball species, each with its unique characteristics. In the foreground, the Fluted Bird's Nest or Cyathus striatus, with its distinctive wavy surface and delicate, feather-like projections, is nestled among the lush foliage. Nearby, the Spiny Puffball or Lycoperdon echinatum (syn. gemmatum) displays its spiky exterior, while the Piriforme or Lycoperdon piriforme boasts a smooth, pear-shaped appearance. The Giant Pasture Puffball or Lycoperdon giganteum, as its name suggests, is the largest of the bunch, with a substantial, spherical shape. The Mycenastrum corium, also known as the Paltry Puffball or Bovista plumbea, is depicted with a dark, velvety cap and a pale, fluffy interior. Other species in this assemblage include the Mycenastrum corium, with its delicate, web-like veil, and the Paltry Puffball, whose name belies its intriguing, complex structure. These fascinating fungi, captured in exquisite detail, offer a glimpse into the rich and diverse world of mycology and the natural beauty of the fungal kingdom.
