EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite "Bust of Antinous" a remarkable piece of ancient art crafted from Thasian marble. Discovered in Patras, this portrait bust immortalizes the youth Anthinoos of Bithyna, who held a special place in the heart of Emperor Hadrian during the 2nd century AD. Tragically, Anthinoos met his untimely demise by drowning in the river Nile in AD 130. In honor of their profound bond, Hadrian commissioned numerous statues, busts, and portraits to commemorate his beloved companion throughout the vast Roman Empire between AD 130-138. Despite its age and damage sustained over time, this front view studio shot perfectly captures the beauty and history encapsulated within this sculpture. The vertical composition allows us to appreciate every intricate detail that remains visible on this incomplete artwork. Against a serene grey background, we are transported back to ancient Rome as we contemplate both the artistic skill employed by its creator and ponder upon Antinous' enigmatic allure. As we gaze at this single object devoid of any human presence today, it serves as an evocative reminder of our connection with the past. This photograph not only celebrates archaeology but also invites us to reflect on how beauty can transcend time and leave an indelible mark on history itself.
