East Antarctics Prince Olav Coast

November 12, 2007 - This cloud-free view of East Antarctics Prince Olav Coast, shows a few types of ice along the Antarctic coast.
Near the lower left corner of the image, Shirase Glacier flows out to sea, forming an ice tongue that floats on the wateras surface. Shirase occupies a glacial valley, and the line where the land ends and the ocean begins is obscured by this river of ice.
East of Shirase Glacier, the coastline is easy to discern, visible as a faint blue line. Bare rock appears in places, and along the coastline, much of the ice is blue ice, pure ice composed of large crystals. Ice absorbs a tiny amount of red light and large ice crystals make this red-light absorption visible to human eyes (whereas tiny snow crystals do not), giving the ice a blue hue

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of East Antarctica's Prince Olav Coast. Taken on November 12,2007, this cloud-free view showcases the diverse forms of ice that adorn the Antarctic coastline. In the lower left corner of the image, we witness the majestic Shirase Glacier gracefully flowing into the sea. This glacial marvel creates an enchanting ice tongue that delicately floats atop the water's surface. As it occupies a glacial valley, it obscures our perception of where land ends and ocean begins. Moving eastward from Shirase Glacier, one can easily discern the faint blue line that represents the coastline. Along this stretch, bare rock emerges sporadically amidst vast expanses of blue ice – pure ice composed of large crystals. The unique properties of these crystals allow them to absorb a minute amount of red light, making this absorption visible to human eyes and giving rise to their striking blue hue. The absence of people in this photograph allows us to fully appreciate nature's grandeur and its delicate balance between frozen landscapes and flowing rivers of ice. It serves as a poignant reminder not only of Earth's breathtaking beauty but also highlights pressing issues such as global warming and climate change. This extraordinary snapshot is brought to us by Stocktrek Images – an epitome of excellence in capturing awe-inspiring moments in nature through photography.
