William Tyndale, English scholar

William Tyndale (c. 1492-1536), English theologian and biblical scholar. Tyndale was born near Dursley in Gloucestershire and was educated at Magdalene College School, Oxford. Tyndales was the first English translation to draw directly from Hebrew and Greek texts, and the first to take advantage of the new medium of print. This allowed for its wide distribution. It was pronounced heretical in England, so his Bibles were smuggled into the country in bales of cloth. Those discovered owning them were punished. At first only the books were destroyed, but soon heretics were burned too - including Tyndale himself in 1536. This engraving first was published in Heroologia Anglica by Henry Holland, printed at Arnhem in 1620

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Todd-White Art Photography showcases the esteemed William Tyndale, an influential English scholar and theologian. Born in Gloucestershire around 1492, Tyndale received his education at Magdalene College School, Oxford. Renowned for his groundbreaking work, he became known as the first translator to directly draw from Hebrew and Greek texts for his English translation of the Bible. Tyndale's translation was a revolutionary achievement that took full advantage of the emerging medium of print, allowing for its widespread distribution. However, due to its perceived heretical nature in England at the time, owning these Bibles was strictly prohibited. To circumvent this oppressive environment, Tyndale's Bibles were ingeniously smuggled into the country concealed within bales of cloth. The consequences for those caught with these forbidden books were severe. Initially resulting in book destruction alone, it soon escalated to include burning heretics themselves - tragically including Tyndale in 1536. The engraving featured in this print originates from "Heroologia Anglica" by Henry Holland and was printed in Arnhem during 1620. Its monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to this depiction of Tyndale; a man whose dedication to biblical scholarship and translation left an indelible mark on history. Todd-White Art Photography captures not only the visual essence but also conveys the profound historical significance behind this image without mentioning any commercial use or affiliation with any specific company.
