Supermarine S. 6B aircraft C016 / 2055
Supermarine S.6B aircraft. This seaplane was developed by British aircraft manufacturer Supermarine for the 1931 Schneider Trophy competition. Testing was carried out in wind tunnels at the National Physical Laboratory, with flights at Southampton Water. This is aircraft S1596, which was flown by John N. Boothman on 13 September to win the trophy. This aircraft is now at the Science Museum, London. The experience gained with this aircraft led to the later Spitfire fighter aircraft, famed for its use during the Second World War. Both aircraft were designed by British aeronautical engineer Reginald Joseph Mitchell (1895-1937)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Supermarine S. 6B aircraft, known for its groundbreaking design and significant role in British aviation history. Developed by the renowned British manufacturer Supermarine, this seaplane was specifically created for the prestigious Schneider Trophy competition held in 1931. The image captures a momentous occasion as John N. Boothman skillfully pilots aircraft S1596 to victory on September 13th, securing the coveted trophy. The aircraft's triumph not only marked a remarkable achievement but also paved the way for future advancements in aviation technology. Designed by esteemed British aeronautical engineer Reginald Joseph Mitchell, both this seaplane and its successor, the legendary Spitfire fighter aircraft of World War II fame, owe their existence to his visionary expertise. Before taking flight over Southampton Water, extensive testing of this innovative aircraft was conducted at wind tunnels within the National Physical Laboratory. Its sleek design and advanced engineering made it an unparalleled marvel of its time. Now residing at London's Science Museum, this historic artifact serves as a testament to human ingenuity and maritime exploration. With its float-equipped structure enabling water landings and takeoffs, it represents a pivotal era in transportation history where air travel intersected with marine capabilities. This monochrome photograph encapsulates not only the technological brilliance behind this Supermarine creation but also pays homage to Britain's rich aviation heritage during the early 20th century.
