Schiaparellis observations of Mars
Schiaparellis observations of Mars. This drawing was made by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli (1835-1910). His most detailed observations were made between 1877 and 1888. He named the seas and continents of Mars, and called the straight surface features channels (mistranslated as canals). He also noticed that the patterns on the surface changed with the Martian seasons. He wrongly assumed this to be due to seasonal changes in vegetation. It is now known that Mars is swept by powerful dust storms which alter the surface features. The idea that there was life on Mars was very popular around the end of the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the meticulous observations of Mars made by Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli in the late 19th century. With his keen eye and dedication, Schiaparelli meticulously mapped out the seas, continents, and geographical features of the red planet between 1877 and 1888. His groundbreaking work led him to name the straight surface features as "canals" although they were later mistranslated as channels. Schiaparelli's astute observations also revealed that Mars underwent changes on its surface with each passing season. Mistakenly attributing these alterations to vegetation growth, he ignited widespread speculation about possible life on Mars during this era. However, modern scientific understanding has since clarified that powerful dust storms sweep across Mars, reshaping its landscape dramatically. Despite this correction, Schiaparelli's contributions remain invaluable in our exploration of planetary science. The intricate illustration featured in this print beautifully captures Schiaparelli's pioneering work. Its circular depiction highlights both hemispheres of Mars while showcasing its highlands and lowlands alongside named seas and continents. This historical artwork serves as a testament to human curiosity and discovery within our solar system. Presented by Science Photo Library, this image invites us to appreciate not only the artistic beauty but also the scientific significance behind Schiaparelli's observations of Mars from over a century ago.
