Papyrus scrolls, Ancient Rome

Papyrus scrolls in Ancient Rome. Papyrus is a wetland sedge found along the Nile in Egypt. Its pith was used as early as the 3rd millennium BC by the Ancient Egyptians, and then later by other civilisations, to produce a paper-like material on which to write. Here, the papyrus is rolled up in the form of scrolls. This artwork is from a series of illustrated French encyclopedia volumes, published by the Epinal printing firm in the late 19th and early 20th century. The series was called Serie encyclopedique des lecons de choses illustrees (Encyclopedic series of object lessons illustrated), and this example is from a volume published in around 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the ancient practice of using papyrus scrolls as a writing material in Ancient Rome. Papyrus, a wetland sedge found along the Nile in Egypt, was ingeniously utilized by various civilizations to produce a paper-like substance for recording information. Dating back to the 3rd millennium BC, this remarkable invention was not only embraced by the Egyptians but also adopted by other cultures throughout history. The artwork featured here is part of an illustrated French encyclopedia series published by the renowned Epinal printing firm during the late 19th and early 20th century. Titled "Serie encyclopedique des lecons de choses illustrees" (Encyclopedic series of object lessons illustrated), this particular volume originates from around 1900. Intriguingly, the image portrays rolled-up papyrus scrolls neatly arranged on shelves alongside other historical artifacts. A distinguished gentleman, possibly a writer or scholar, can be seen engrossed in reading one of these precious documents at his writing table adorned with classical Roman elements such as togas and sculptures. This photograph not only captures an important technological advancement but also offers us a glimpse into Roman culture and intellectual pursuits during that era. It serves as a testament to how our ancestors harnessed their ingenuity to develop innovative methods for communication and knowledge preservation.
