Ovarian cycle, artwork

Ovarian cycle, computer artwork. Once sexual maturity is reached up to 20 oocytes start developing into eggs (ovums) every menstrual cycle. Only one will reach full maturity as a Graafian follicle (top right) and release its egg at ovulation (bottom right). The follicle then develops into a corpus luteum (grey and yellow), which secretes progesterone to build up the lining of the uterus, ready for a fertilised egg. If there is no fertilised egg after 12 days it stops secreting and degenerates into a corpus albicans (yellow)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork, titled "Ovarian Cycle" beautifully illustrates the intricate process of female reproduction. Against a striking black background, this computer-generated image showcases the various stages and components involved in the ovarian cycle. As sexual maturity is attained, approximately 20 oocytes begin their development into eggs during each menstrual cycle. However, only one will reach full maturity as a Graafian follicle, depicted in the top right corner of the image. This mature follicle releases its egg during ovulation, shown in the bottom right corner. Following ovulation, the Graafian follicle transforms into a corpus luteum represented by shades of grey and yellow. This structure secretes progesterone to prepare and thicken the lining of the uterus for potential fertilization. If no fertilized egg implants within 12 days after ovulation, this corpus luteum ceases secretion and degenerates into a corpus albicans illustrated with vibrant yellows. The detailed annotations throughout this artwork provide valuable insights into each stage of development within the female reproductive system. From primary follicles to secondary oocytes and from maturation to ovulating processes – every step is meticulously labeled for educational purposes. This remarkable piece created by Science Photo Library offers an artistic representation that merges biology with aesthetics seamlessly. It serves as both an informative tool for understanding human anatomy and a visually stunning work of art capturing nature's incredible complexity.
