N. I. Lobachevsky, Russian mathematician

Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky (1792-1856), Russian mathematician. Lobachevsky studied and worked at Kazan University, Kazan, Tatarstan, then part of the Russian Empire. He is most famous for developing in the 1820s a non-Euclidean hyperbolic geometry, sometimes called Lobachevskian geometry. This artwork shows him studying a book. He is wearing several awards of the Russian Empire. His final years saw him affected by declining health, and he eventually died in poverty in 1856. Forty years later, in 1896, the Lobachevsky Prize was established in his honour, and a crater on the Moon is named after him
