HIV DNA, molecular model

HIV DNA. Molecular model of a sequence of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) produced by HIV (the human immunodeficiency virus) after infecting a human cell. This is a stage in the process where HIV replicates using human cell machinery, causing AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). DNA is a helical molecule (here spiralling across the image) made up of two interlocking sugar-phosphate strands bound together by their nucleotide bases. Three twists of the helix are seen here. This is HIV-1, the more common of the two forms of HIV. This space-filled model shows 527 atoms. The atoms (spheres) are: carbon (light blue), oxygen (red), phosphorus (pink), and nitrogen (blue). Hydrogen atoms are not shown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a molecular model of HIV DNA, providing us with a glimpse into the intricate world of biochemistry and genetics. The image depicts a sequence of DNA produced by the human immunodeficiency virus after infiltrating a human cell, ultimately leading to the development of AIDS. As we observe this stage in the replication process, it becomes evident how HIV utilizes our own cellular machinery for its reproduction. The helical structure of DNA is beautifully illustrated here as it spirals across the image, revealing three twists in its composition. This particular model represents HIV-1, which is more commonly encountered than its counterpart. With 527 atoms meticulously represented through spheres of different colors - carbon (light blue), oxygen (red), phosphorus (pink), and nitrogen (blue) - we gain insight into the complex chemical makeup that underlies life itself. While hydrogen atoms are not depicted in this artwork, their absence does not diminish the significance of this visual representation. Rather, it serves as a reminder that science often requires imagination and interpretation to convey complex concepts effectively. Through this stunning illustration from Science Photo Library, we are reminded both of the immense power held within genetic material like DNA and also our ongoing battle against diseases such as HIV/AIDS. It stands as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit to understand and combat these medical challenges through scientific exploration and discovery.
