Elliptocytosis, light micrograph

Elliptocytosis. Light micrograph of red blood cells in a case of elliptocytosis. Red blood cells (erythrocytes) carry oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from body tissues. Elliptocytosis is a hereditary disorder that results in red blood cells with this oval shape, rather than the normal biconcave disc shape. Unless the form of this disorder is severe, treatment is normally not needed. Elliptocytosis can lead to a predisposition to forms of anaemia, gallstones and an enlarged spleen (splenomegaly)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate world of red blood cells affected by elliptocytosis. The light micrograph reveals a mesmerizing view of these vital cells, responsible for transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout our body tissues. However, in cases of elliptocytosis, their shape deviates from the usual biconcave disc form to an oval one. Elliptocytosis is a hereditary disorder that can have various implications on our health. While mild forms may not require treatment, this condition can predispose individuals to certain types of anemia, gallstones, and even an enlarged spleen (splenomegaly). It serves as a reminder of how genetics play a crucial role in shaping our well-being. The image beautifully captures the abnormality within these red blood cells, providing valuable insights into the field of hematology and cellular biology. Its histological details offer researchers and medical professionals alike an opportunity to better understand this pathological condition at a microscopic level. Science Photo Library's dedication to capturing such remarkable images allows us to delve deeper into the complexities of human biology and appreciate both its normalcy and abnormalities. This photograph stands as a testament to their commitment in advancing scientific knowledge while showcasing the stunning intricacies found within our own bodies.
