Easton and Amos Centrifugal Pump

Illustration of the pumping machine built by Easton Amos and Sons exhibited in operation at the London International Exhibition of 1861. It was based on the centrifugal pump invented by John George Appold and which was driven by a two-cylinder steam engine. Appolds patent centrifugal pump had curved blades and was considerably more efficient than other centrifugal pumps of that time. Designed for land drainage and irrigation, during the 1850s it drained the last of the Fenland great meres -Whittesley Mere- creating prime agricultural land. However, under the Great Fen Project the mere may be partially returned to wetland again. An 1861 Easton & Amos two-cylinder steam engine driving an Appold centrifugal pump is preserved in running order at Westonzoyland Pumping Station Museum in Somerset, England

Agriculture Drainage Engine Exhibition Irrigation Land Steam 1861 Amos Easton Fenland Fens Land Reclamation Reclamation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Easton and Amos Centrifugal Pump, a true marvel of engineering from the 19th century. The illustration captures this pumping machine in action at the prestigious London International Exhibition of 1861, where it astounded onlookers with its groundbreaking design. Based on John George Appold's revolutionary centrifugal pump invention, this magnificent piece of machinery was driven by a two-cylinder steam engine. Unlike its predecessors, Appold's patent centrifugal pump boasted curved blades that significantly enhanced its efficiency. This innovation proved instrumental in draining Whittlesey Mere, one of Fenland's great meres during the 1850s. By transforming vast stretches of waterlogged land into fertile agricultural fields, it played a crucial role in reclaiming valuable territory for farming purposes. Today, visitors can witness history come alive at the Westonzoyland Pumping Station Museum in Somerset, England. Preserved meticulously and still fully functional is an authentic 1861 Easton & Amos two-cylinder steam engine powering an Appold centrifugal pump. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and serves as a reminder of our relentless pursuit to harness nature for our benefit. As we reflect upon this extraordinary photograph print captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded not only of the immense impact this technology had on land reclamation but also how it shaped agriculture and irrigation practices throughout history.
