EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and delicate bones of the middle ear, depicted in a stunning 1844 artwork. Part of an eight-volume anatomy atlas called "Traite complet de l anatomie de l homme" this particular plate (81 bis) was meticulously crafted by French physician and anatomist Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery, with illustrations by Nicolas-Henri Jacob. The image transports us back to the 19th century, offering a glimpse into the world of medical exploration during that time. The detailed illustration highlights various components of the middle ear, including the hammer and anvil bones known as ossicles. These bony structures play a crucial role in our sense of hearing, transmitting sound vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear. As we admire this historical masterpiece, it is fascinating to ponder how far our understanding of human anatomy has progressed since then. This artwork serves as a testament to both scientific curiosity and artistic skill, capturing not only the beauty but also the complexity inherent in our own bodies.
