Blue green algae stigonema, LM C013 / 5286
Light micrograph using differential interference contrast microscopy (DIC) of the filamentous blue-green algae (group name Cyanophycophyta), called stigonema. Blue-green algae are considered to be one of the most primitive organisms, dating back to pre- Cambrian times. A single row of cells such as one of these strands, is called a trichome. When surrounded by a gelatinous sheath it is called a filament. Oscillatoria lacks a slimy sheath. The strands of Oscillatoria exhibit a swaying motion and can also move backward & forward. Horizontal object size: 0.6 mm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of blue-green algae, specifically stigonema, captured using differential interference contrast microscopy (DIC). Belonging to the group Cyanophycophyta, these filamentous organisms are considered one of the most ancient life forms, dating back to pre-Cambrian times. Each individual strand seen here is called a trichome and when enveloped by a gelatinous sheath, it forms a filament. Unlike some other species like Oscillatoria which lack this slimy covering, stigonema exhibits a mesmerizing swaying motion and can even move backward and forward. The horizontal object size depicted in this image measures 0.6 mm. This magnified view offers us an insight into the fascinating world of microscopic photosynthesis as we witness nature's mastery at work. The vibrant blue hue combined with hints of green creates an ethereal ambiance that draws our attention to the delicate structures within each trichome. Through this photograph, we gain appreciation for the complexity hidden within seemingly simple organisms. It serves as a reminder that even in their primitive form, these cyanobacteria play crucial roles in sustaining ecosystems worldwide. Let us marvel at their resilience and adaptability while acknowledging their significance in shaping our planet's history since time immemorial.
