EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a vintage rectangular counter card advertising the iconic "Navy Mixture" tobacco from 1920-25. The exquisite design features a background adorned with an elegant gold basket-work pattern, while a brown panel at the center boasts a regal rope and crown border. Positioned towards the bottom right are three packs of this renowned tobacco brand, enticing potential customers with their alluring presence. The text on the card proudly displays the variations available: ""Mile", "Medium", & "White Label". Emblazoned above these descriptors is the prominent brand name "PLAYERs", followed by "NAVY" and "MIXTURE". A hanging loop positioned at the top adds to its charm and practicality. On its reverse side, we find handwritten notes that authenticate this rare piece of history as dating back to 1920. Another note intriguingly states that only one copy of this particular card exists, further enhancing its value as a collector's item. A label affixed to it reveals that MARDONS was responsible for creating such window novelties, embossed showcards, varnishing services, gelatiners, frame makers in both Bristol and London. This fascinating glimpse into Nottingham's past not only highlights John Player and Sons' contribution to advertising but also evokes nostalgia for an era when sailing ships ruled the seascape and sailors donned distinctive uniforms
