EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the golden era of travel, specifically to the year 1935 when the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) sought to entice holidaymakers to Bridlington, a charming coastal resort in Yorkshire. The poster, skillfully crafted by renowned artist Tom Purvis, showcases two joyful children frolicking in the sea against a backdrop of endless blue skies and rolling waves. Purvis was not only an exceptional artist but also a passionate advocate for elevating commercial art as a profession. In fact, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Society of Industrial Artists in 1930, which aimed at improving training standards for commercial artists and expanding their employment opportunities. His dedication paid off when he became one of the first Royal Designers for Industry just six years later. The artwork itself perfectly embodies Purvis' signature style characterized by bold colors and flat compositions. Measuring an impressive 1016 mm x 1270 mm, this poster is truly a work of art that captures the essence of seaside fun and relaxation. As we gaze upon this timeless image, we are transported back to an era where Bridlington's sandy beaches were filled with laughter and joy. It serves as a reminder that even amidst changing times, some things remain constant – like the allure of idyllic coastal resorts and the everlasting memories created by carefree days spent playing under sunny skies.
