EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures three stills from a film taken during a historic moment in World War II. The image showcases Avro Lancaster Mark I, DV380 AJ-N, of No. 617 Squadron RAF, flown by the esteemed Wing Commander G L Cheshire. On the night of 8/9 February 1944, this courageous squadron commander led a low-level attack on the Gnome-Rhone aero-engine factory at Limoges, France. Prior to launching the assault, Wing Commander Cheshire demonstrated extraordinary compassion and bravery by flying his Lancaster low over the factory three times to warn French workers about the impending air raid. This sequence of images reveals the intense moments when 30-lb incendiary bombs detonated over the heart of the factory during his fourth pass. The precision and accuracy displayed by each following Lancaster is truly remarkable as they dropped their colossal 12,000-pound bombs directly on target markers. These brave men exemplify not only military prowess but also humanity amidst conflict. This photograph transports us back to that fateful night in history when war raged across Europe. It serves as a poignant reminder of both heroism and devastation experienced during World War II. As we reflect upon these events captured through Memory Lane Prints' lens, may we honor those who fought valiantly for freedom and peace while never forgetting the cost endured by all involved parties.
