A Humber Super Snipe crossing the Berlin Wall at Checkpoint Charlie
A Humber Super Snipe crossing the Berlin Wall at Checkpoint Charlie. Circa 1965
Following the erection of the wall in 1961, diplomats and foreigners were still allowed to cross the wall, and the UK along with the other Allied powers in Berlin regularly sent troops and diplomats into the Soviet sector through Checkpoint Charlie, one of the guarded crossing points between East and West.
Both sides were entitled to do this under the authority of the four Allied powers, made after the Yalta Conference

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in time - a Humber Super Snipe gracefully crossing the Berlin Wall at Checkpoint Charlie. Taken circa 1965, this image symbolizes the resilience and determination of those living amidst the Cold War tensions. Following the erection of the wall in 1961, diplomats and foreigners were still permitted to traverse between East and West Berlin. The UK, along with other Allied powers stationed in Berlin, regularly sent troops and diplomats into the Soviet sector through Checkpoint Charlie. This crossing point was heavily guarded but served as a vital link for communication and diplomacy during these tumultuous times. The photograph showcases not only an iconic car from that era, but also provides a glimpse into daily life on both sides of the divided city. The observation platform towering above serves as a reminder of constant surveillance while people go about their routines. It is important to note that this act of crossing was authorized by all four Allied powers after negotiations following the Yalta Conference. It represents an assertion of power against attempts to completely isolate East Germany from its Western counterparts. This remarkable image encapsulates an era defined by political tension yet punctuated with moments where humanity transcended barriers imposed upon them.
