X Rays

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing X-ray image of fruit, taken around the turn of the 20th century, offers a fascinating glimpse into the early days of medical imaging technology. Part of the Boswell Collection, Box 165, held at Mary Evans Prints Online, this X-ray lantern slide is believed to date back to approximately 1900. X-rays, discovered by German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895, were initially met with great skepticism and awe. The ability to see inside the human body without invasive surgery was a groundbreaking discovery that revolutionized medicine. It wasn't long before researchers began experimenting with X-rays to study the internal structures of various objects, including fruits and vegetables. In this image, the delicate details of an apple, pear, and plum are revealed as if in a magical X-ray vision. The seeds, pits, and even the tiny hairs on the apple's core are clearly visible. The image is thought to have been captured using a glass plate negative, which was then projected onto a screen using a lantern slide projector. The use of X-rays for medical purposes quickly gained popularity, but their potential for non-medical applications was also recognized. X-ray photography became a popular pastime and was used to create intriguing images of everyday objects, as seen in this fruit X-ray. This rare and intriguing X-ray image of fruit serves as a reminder of the early days of medical imaging technology and the sense of wonder and discovery that accompanied it. Today, X-rays continue to be an essential tool in medicine, and this fascinating glimpse into the past offers a unique perspective on their history and significance.
