1. Title: "William Wirt: A Pioneer of American Law and Politics" William Wirt (1772-1834), an influential American lawyer and statesman, is depicted in this historic portrait. Born on October 16, 1772, in Westmoreland County, Virginia, Wirt's legal career began in 1793 when he was admitted to the Virginia bar. He quickly gained a reputation for his eloquence and intelligence, and in 1801, he was appointed as the Commonwealth's Attorney for Henrico County. Wirt's political career commenced in 1804 when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives as a Democratic-Republican. He served for three terms before returning to private practice in 1809. In 1817, Wirt was appointed as the United States Attorney General by President James Monroe, a position he held until 1829. During his tenure, he argued several landmark cases before the Supreme Court, including Cohens v. Virginia and Martin v. Hunter's Lessee. Wirt's most notable achievement came in 1831 when he ran for the presidency as the Whig Party's nominee. Although he lost the election to Andrew Jackson, Wirt's campaign helped establish the Whig Party as a major political force in the United States. After his presidential bid, Wirt continued to practice law until his death on February 2, 1834.
