This evocative photograph captures the facade of Seafield House in Seaforth, Merseyside, which was opened in 1914 as a home for mental defectives by the West Derby Union. The Union, which was responsible for the care and support of the destitute, infirm, and disabled in Liverpool, chose the former convent of the Sisters of Mercy as the site for this new institution. The Sisters of Mercy had vacated the convent in 1913, and the building, with its imposing Gothic Revival architecture, offered ample space for the care of those in need. Seafield House was designed to provide a safe and nurturing environment for its residents, with a focus on their physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. The photograph, taken in 1925, shows the house in all its grandeur, with its tall, arched windows, intricate stonework, and ornate gateway.
