EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the dedication and camaraderie of the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) staff at Quex Park during the autumn of 1917. At the heart of the image, Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton stands proudly at the back, surrounded by his devoted team. Among them are Jack Hedge, the Hospital Masseur, and Mary Marlowe, one of the many dedicated volunteers. In the middle row, we find Camille Van Dyck, an Hospital Orderly, and Mrs. Wells, whose role is not clearly defined but whose presence is essential. Seated in the front row, the Hospital Commandant, Hannah Powell-Cotton, exudes a sense of authority and determination. To her right, Dr. Worthington, the Medical Officer, prepares for another day of healing. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened in October 1914 and remained operational until January 1919. Run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, this hospital was a vital contribution to the war effort, providing care for the wounded and injured soldiers. The Commandant, Hannah Powell-Cotton, was the wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, the founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Fanny Watson and Dora Watson are also depicted in the image, their faces filled with a mix of concern and compassion. Together, these remarkable individuals dedicated their time and energy to the care of the soldiers, creating an environment of hope and healing amidst the chaos of war.
