EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the entrance to Thessaloniki's iconic White Tower, as it appeared during the French and multi-national occupation of the city towards the end of World War I, around 1917. The White Tower, a historic landmark and symbol of Thessaloniki, stands proudly at the city's waterfront, its tall, imposing silhouette framed by the blue waters of the Thermaic Gulf. The image reveals the tower's grand arched entrance, adorned with intricate stonework and topped with a crenellated parapet. Two flagpoles fly the flags of the occupying powers - the French Tricolor and the Macedonian Front flag. A French language sign, visible above the entrance, announces the presence of a restaurant within the tower's walls. The establishment's name is lost to time, but its existence is a testament to the multicultural and international character of Thessaloniki during this period. The White Tower, originally built in the late 15th century, has a rich history steeped in conflict and transformation. It has served as a fortress, a prison, and a museum, and has borne witness to numerous historical events, including the siege of Thessaloniki during the Ottoman-Venetian Wars and the city's liberation from the Ottomans in 1912. Today, it stands as a cherished symbol of Thessaloniki's past and a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world to explore its historic walls and learn about the city's fascinating history.
