This photograph showcases one of the rarest and least-known aircraft in aviation history: the Sukhoi Su-6 attack plane. With only three units ever built and two surviving to this day, the Su-6 holds a unique place in aviation annals as a Soviet response to the formidable German Focke-Wulf Fw 190 and a competitor to the legendary Il-2 Stormovik. The Sukhoi Su-6, also known as the "Shkapa" or "Wasp," was designed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau in the late 1940s. It was a single-seat, low-wing monoplane with a distinctive canopy and a powerful engine. The plane was intended for close air support and ground attack roles, featuring heavy armament, including two 37mm cannons and up to 1,000 kg of bombs. Despite its impressive specifications, the Su-6's production was halted due to various issues, including engine problems and the availability of other successful Soviet attack aircraft. Consequently, it never saw combat during World War II. The three Su-6s built were used primarily for testing and evaluation purposes.
