This late 19th century illustration depicts a scene from the biblical story of the Spies, as recorded in the Book of Joshua in the Old Testament. In the image, Joshua, the successor of Moses as the leader of the Israelites, is seen sending out two spies, Thoshabh and Calev, to explore the land of Canaan, which the Israelites were about to enter after their long exodus from Egypt. The two spies, dressed in the garb of the local inhabitants, are shown creeping through the vineyard of a Canaanite city, their eyes fixed on the walled fortress in the distance. The lush greenery and vibrant colors of the illustration contrast sharply with the arid desert landscape that the Israelites had left behind, offering a tantalizing glimpse of the promised land. The Bible describes how the spies returned with a favorable report, bringing back grapes and a cluster of pomegranates as evidence of the fertility of the land.
