Born on March 14, 1847, in London, Lankester's passion for natural history was ignited at a young age, leading him to make significant contributions to the field of zoology. Lankester's career began in earnest when he was appointed as an assistant at the Natural History Museum in London in 1866. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the Keeper of the Department of Invertebrates in 1888. During his tenure, he oversaw the expansion of the museum's invertebrate collections, which grew to become one of the most comprehensive in the world. Lankester was an accomplished researcher, publishing numerous papers on various aspects of zoology, including the classification and systematics of invertebrates, the morphology and development of marine invertebrates, and the ecology of freshwater organisms. He was a pioneer in the use of microscopy in zoological research and made important discoveries concerning the life cycles of various marine invertebrates. Lankester was also an excellent teacher and mentor, inspiring many young scientists to pursue careers in zoology. He was a fellow of the Royal Society and a recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Linnean Society's Darwin Medal in 1896 and the Royal Society's Copley Medal in 1911.
