EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Princess Sophia Dolgorouky, later known as Sofka Skipwith, is seen playfully amusing herself in a traveling basket suspended from the deck of HMS Marlborough during the Russian royal family's daring escape from the Bolshevik Revolution in April 1919. The Romanovs had taken refuge in Yalta, Crimea, which was still under White Russian control, but with the Red Army closing in, they were forced to flee. Princess Sophia, the daughter of Prince Sergei Dolgoruky, who served as Master of the Household to the Dowager Tsaritsa, is seen in high spirits as she clings to the ropes of the pulley system that lowered the basket from the ship. The image captures a moment of levity amidst the chaos and uncertainty of their escape. The HMS Marlborough, a British cruiser, had been sent to evacuate the Russian royals and their entourage from Yalta. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the desperate situation faced by the Romanovs and the thousands of other Russian refugees who fled the country during this turbulent time in Russian history. The photograph is a testament to the resilience and determination of the Russian royal family and their supporters, who managed to escape the clutches of the Bolsheviks and begin a new life in exile. The image also serves as a reminder of the rich history and culture of Russia, which continues to captivate and intrigue people around the world. This photograph is a valuable historical record of a pivotal moment in Russian history, and it is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit in the face of adversity. The image is believed to have been taken in April 1919, and it is a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of the Russian royal family and their supporters during a time of great upheaval.
