Alcock Atlantic Browns Clifden Direct Galway Vickers Vimy 1919

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of triumph and relief as Alcock and Brown, the intrepid British aviators, came to a halt in the Derrygimla bog near Clifden, County Galway, Ireland on June 15, 1919. Their Vickers Vimy aircraft, a biplane with a distinctive triangular wing design, had just completed the first direct non-stop transatlantic flight from Newfoundland to Ireland. The achievement, which took 16 hours and 28 minutes, shattered the previous record for the longest distance ever flown in an airplane and established the duo as pioneers in aviation history. The rugged terrain of the Irish bog presented a challenging landing site, but Alcock and Brown successfully touched down, ending their grueling journey. The successful completion of this flight marked a significant milestone in aviation history, paving the way for regular transatlantic air travel and demonstrating the growing potential of aircraft as a viable means of transportation. This photograph is a testament to the courage, determination, and innovation of Alcock and Brown and the early pioneers of aviation.
