1526 1595 Flanders Fleece Governor Knight Philip Croy

EDITORS COMMENTS
Philip Croy of Aerschot (1526-1595), a prominent figure in the history of the Low Countries, is depicted in this elegant portrait. Born in Aerschot, Belgium, Croy rose to prominence under the Habsburg rulers of the Spanish Netherlands. He was appointed Governor of Flanders in 1567, a position he held until his death. Croy's tenure as Governor was marked by his efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region during a time of political and religious upheaval. The image shows Croy dressed in the robes of a duke, signifying his noble status. The Golden Fleece, the prestigious order of chivalry to which he belonged, is prominently displayed on his chest. The Order of the Golden Fleece, established in 1430 by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, was one of the most prestigious orders in Europe, and its members included many European monarchs and nobles. Croy's membership in this order further underscores his high rank and influence. Despite his attempts to maintain peace, Croy was unable to prevent the outbreak of the Dutch Revolt in 1568. The revolt, which lasted until 1648, was a series of uprisings against Spanish rule in the Netherlands. Croy's failure to quell the rebellion led to his resignation as Governor in 1573. He spent the remaining years of his life in exile in Spain. This portrait offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Habsburg court in the Low Countries during the 16th century. It also serves as a reminder of the complex political landscape of the region during this period, marked by the struggle for power between various European powers and the challenges posed by religious and political dissent.
