Philip Croy of Aerschot (1526-1595), a prominent figure in the history of the Low Countries, is depicted in this elegant portrait. Born in Aerschot, Belgium, Croy rose to prominence under the Habsburg rulers of the Spanish Netherlands. He was appointed Governor of Flanders in 1567, a position he held until his death. Croy's tenure as Governor was marked by his efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region during a time of political and religious upheaval. The image shows Croy dressed in the robes of a duke, signifying his noble status. The Golden Fleece, the prestigious order of chivalry to which he belonged, is prominently displayed on his chest.
