EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time from the Winter Garden of Quex Park during February 1916. The scene features a group of Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurses and patients, standing proudly outside amidst the winter landscape. Among them is Hannah Powell-Cotton, the Commandant of the Birchington Detachment, who is seen standing beside her mother. The Quex Park VAD Hospital, run by Kent/178, opened on 15 October 1914 and provided essential care to soldiers injured during World War I. Hannah Powell-Cotton, born in 1881, was the wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Her daughter, Antoinette Powell-Cotton, is also seen in the photograph, dressed in her nurses uniform. The hospital closed on 31 January 1919, having cared for countless soldiers throughout the war years. This poignant image offers a glimpse into the dedication and sacrifice of the VAD nurses and their patients during a time of great need.
